Clean eating at Easter time?!

When I saw this meme during the week, I instantly thought of Easter this weekend – and how it will probably suck for all the clean eaters out there – no chocolate eggs or hot cross buns? I just couldn’t handle it!

It seems so many people around me, and in Perth in general, are OBSESSED with the trend of clean eating at the moment (and the hashtags that come with it – #cleaneating #paleo #nutrition #superfoods etc.).

I’m not sure if it’s a fad or if it will last, but there seems to be many advocates out there for this lifestyle/diet choice.

I’m certainly not against clean eating in anyway – I’m aware that there are enormous benefits to fuelling your body with food in its most natural state, but I just question if this trend of eating is sustainable long term. I’m not an expert, but I know when I completely halt my intake of something – for example chocolate – I am more likely to have an extreme binge on it later on, than if I was just to eat it in moderation. The same goes for only eating, unprocessed, whole foods all the time – surely there would be cravings for something ‘naughty’ every now and then, like a packet of chips or even a fresh white bread roll?  And wouldn’t it be hard to be a clean eater during festive periods or celebrations such as Easter, Christmas, birthdays and weddings, where there is an abundance of amazing food (and drink) options that aren’t ‘clean’? And talking about sustainable, surely the cost (monetary) of clean eating long term would be phenomenal?

But maybe the goodness being put into your body far outweighs these challenges and costs – I guess you can’t really put a price on health.

I personally believe in balance and that everything is ok in moderation (‘a little bit of this, a little bit of that’), but that it is also ok so indulge sometimes too.

So, on that note, I hope you do get to indulge over the Easter long weekend which whatever food you desire – whether it be berries and nuts, or chocolate and hot cross buns (I certainly know what I’ll be going for!)

Have a happy and safe Easter break and enjoy the time with your family and friends.
